Clear Aligners FAQs

Here are the answers to our most frequently asked questions.

In many cases, Clear Aligners can be faster than braces, especially for mild to moderate alignment issues. Mild cases typically take 6 to 9 months, moderate cases 12 to 15 months, and severe cases 18 to 24 months. Braces usually require 18 months to 3 years.

The speed of your Clear Aligners treatment depends on your case complexity, how consistently you wear your aligners at least 22 hours per day, and your body’s natural response to tooth movement. Minor issues may progress quickly with fewer office visits, while severe cases may still require braces for optimal results.

As of 2026, the Canada Dental Care Plan does not generally cover orthodontic treatments like Clear Aligners, since they are considered cosmetic rather than essential. CDCP benefits focus mainly on preventive and basic dental care such as exams, cleanings, X-rays, fillings, extractions, and root canals.

When orthodontics might be covered: Rarely, Clear Aligners or braces may be covered if medically necessary, for example, to correct a severe bite problem affecting oral function. Exceptions are evaluated individually.

What you should do: Confirm coverage with Sun Life or the CDCP administrator and ask your dentist for a pre-determination to see if your Clear Aligners plan might qualify under a special medical exception. Even if CDCP benefits do not cover Clear Aligners, your dental team can help explore alternative payment options or private insurance to manage costs.

Clear Aligners works well for many patients with mild to moderate crowding, spacing, overbites, or underbites. It may not be suitable if you have severe bite issues, rotated teeth, untreated cavities, gum disease, dental implants, or other oral health concerns.

Clear Aligners also requires commitment. You must wear your aligners 20 to 22 hours per day and follow your treatment plan closely. Even if one provider says you are not a candidate, a skilled Clear Aligners-certified dentist may still create a customized plan. A consultation is the best way to determine your options.

Yes. Clear Aligners is designed to work efficiently, but your habits make a big difference. Wear your aligners 20 to 22 hours per day, follow your dentist’s schedule, use Clear Aligners chewies to seat trays properly, maintain excellent oral hygiene, and switch to new aligners at night when possible. Protect your aligners and minimize time out during meals to stay on track.

Most patients have Clear Aligners check-ups every 6 to 8 weeks. During these visits, your dentist ensures your aligners fit correctly, monitors your teeth movement, provides your next set of trays, and answers questions. Regular visits help keep treatment on schedule and prevent issues.

Clear Aligners Cleaning Crystals are specially formulated to keep your aligners clean, clear, and free from bacteria. Dissolve the crystals in water and soak your aligners daily. This prevents odors, discoloration, and plaque buildup, helping maintain oral health and aligner appearance. Regular use ensures your treatment stays on track.

Remove your aligners whenever you drink anything other than water. Hot drinks, coffee, tea, soda, or juices can stain, warp, or damage your aligners. Sugary or acidic drinks trapped between teeth and aligners increase the risk of cavities. Water is safe and will not affect your aligners or oral health. Always brush your teeth before putting aligners back in after eating or drinking.

Clear Aligners aligners are made from smooth, BPA-free plastic and custom-molded to fit your teeth precisely. Some patients notice mild pressure or slight discomfort when switching trays or minor edges at the start of treatment. This is normal and usually resolves in a few days. If any edge feels sharp or irritates your cheeks or gums, your dentist can smooth it or adjust it.

Clear Aligners is more complex with dental implants because implants are fixed and do not move like natural teeth. Your dentist will carefully plan treatment to work around them. In some cases, Clear Aligners can still align natural teeth around implants, while alternative solutions may be recommended. A consultation with a Clear Aligners-certified dentist is essential.

SmartForce attachments are small, tooth-colored bumps that help your aligners move teeth effectively. Occasionally, an attachment may loosen or fall off. Contact your dentist promptly to replace it. Avoid using your teeth as tools or biting hard foods, and handle your aligners carefully to prevent attachments from coming off.

The straightened smile achieved with Clear Aligners can last a long time, but retainers are crucial. Teeth naturally shift due to aging, habits, and chewing. Wearing retainers as instructed, usually every night, keeps teeth in their new positions. Skipping or irregular use can cause unwanted movement and may require further treatment.
